CBD Infused

CBD is growing in popularity in the UK. It has cleverly sidestepped the Psychoactive Substances Act 20161 (PSA) that came into force on 26 May 2016.
As CBD products contain little to no THC, they are therefore legal, allowing us all to make the most of its therapeutic health benefits.

The fact that CBD is legal has created a booming industry which has encouraged the production of oils and tinctures sold in high street stores, from vape liquids and concentrates sold in vape shops.

Like most things in life, when it comes to consuming, we all have our preferences. Whether it’s eating, drinking, vaping or smoking, each one of us has our unique likes and dislikes. This often comes down to the individual’s lifestyle, tastes, beliefs, and requirements.
CBD is no different. There is a multitude of different ways to consume CBD, and in this article, we will explore the various forms and the benefits of each method.

Tinctures

Tinctures like our Patch Adam range are produced by steeping cannabis flowers or isolates in high-proof grain alcohol, then applying low heat to this solution. This allows the active compounds in cannabis to infuse into the alcohol, much of which is then boiled off and evaporated, leaving only the CBD. The result is a potent liquid that delivers the effects of the cannabinoid molecules without any smoking or another form of combustion.

This is by far the most popular method of consumption by those that are trying a cannabis-based product for the first time.
Tinctures are a discreet way to consume CBD throughout the day in small, measured doses thanks to the accompanying pipette.

There are two main ways to consume tinctures. You can add your desired drops of oil or vegetable-glycerin based CBD extracts into your food or drinks. Or with alcohol-based tinctures, you can place a few drops under your tongue for faster absorption.

Main Benefits:

  • A better dosage control for beginners
  • Easy to use
  • Discreet
  • A great way to start a cannabis-based treatment

Onset Time: Up to 2 hours
Average Duration: Up to 8 hours

Vaping CBD e-liquid or Smoking CBD flowers/concentrate

2019 brings lots of exciting variations of CBD products. Infused e-liquids mean that you can get the benefits of CBD without the tar that you get from smoking cannabis. For those that are keen to reduce or stop their consumption of regular cannabis (and it’s psychoactive properties), CBD flowers offer a similar smoking experience without the head high and brain fog.

Inhaling is the quickest way to feel the benefits of CBD as it enters the bloodstream directly through the lungs. The effects are, however short-lived, typically lasting around 2 hours.

When it comes to vaping you have a few different options; Either vaping CBD e-liquid, CBD concentrates or vaping dried CBD-rich flower with a dry herb vaporiser.

As long as the CBD product is free from additives and contaminants, and is from an approved source, it will provide an excellent way of delivering the CBD quickly and effectively.

Another option in this category is CBD concentrates, which can come in an oil, wax, shatter, crumble, or other isolations or distillations that require some heating equipment to inhale. This could be a vape pen, or an oil rig (a water pipe with a specialised attachment for combusting oil). These concentrates usually contain higher concentration levels of CBD than e-liquid.

The best CBD companies will be transparent about their processes. You certainly get what you pay for.

Whether you choose to vape concentrate or dry herb, both methods are “cleaner” than actually smoking hemp flower, which many people enjoy although can irritate the throat and lungs with carbon and tar.

Main Benefits:

  • The quick onset of effects
  • Helpful for those wanting to reduce or stop smoking cannabis
  • Variety of concentrates, terpene profiles, and CBD strengths to choose from

Onset Time: 5-10 minutes
Average Duration: 2-4 hours

Edibles

For the more health-conscious users that are concerned about the possible adverse side effects from vaping or smoking CBD, there are the options of edibles.

The incorporation of CBD in edible products is becoming increasingly popular.
In Brighton, there is a restaurant called Canna Kitchen. It provides vegan and vegetarian food that is infused with CBD. Downstairs they have a cocktail bar featuring CBD infused drinks. Upstairs they have a CBD dispensary offering CBD infused edibles and CBD-rich flowers.

This goes to show the leaps and bounds that the industry is making! In only a short time, the magnitude of new products has hit the market.

Typical products on the UK market you can find infused with CBD are brownies, cookies, gummy bears, lollipops, fizzy drinks, and honey.

But the innovation doesn’t stop there! This is a tiny sample of what can be found.
If you can think of it, it can probably be done. Some companies have even gone as far as creating CBD infused toothpicks - perfect for those of us looking to keep up our dental hygiene after indulging in some CBD treats.

This is an excellent example of how CBD is being experimented with in ways that will encourage more people to consider a cannabis-based treatment for their health issues.

Ingesting CBD rather than inhaling it also provides a longer-term, more holistic effect since the cannabinoid is broken down slowly through the digestive system before entering the bloodstream.
For this same reason, it may take longer to feel the beneficial effects of CBD when ingesting it.

Main Benefits:

  • Longer-acting
  • Variety of options
  • One of the healthiest methods of consumption

Onset Time: Up to 2 hours
Average Duration: Up to 8 hours

Topical

A lot of cannabinoid receptors are found in the skin, so topical application of CBD and cannabis products can also bring therapeutic results. This is another excellent method of using CBD for those that don’t have much experience with cannabis products because there is no sense of consumption involved.

It’s absorbed through the skin and relieves that area of discomfort without being absorbed into your bloodstream.

Applying CBD in a lotion, oil, or gel form is the most effective way to spot-treat localised pain and inflammation, such as irritated skin, joint pain and muscle stiffness.

Topical CBD treatment was useful for my bad back, from the lower back pain caused by a slipped disc to the stiffness that is caused from holding myself differently because of the lower back pain.

It can also be useful on more lasting issues, such as chronic pain and arthritis, but even more acute issues and skin conditions such as acne.

Main Benefits:

  • Treats localised aches and pains
  • Nourishing effects for skin conditions
  • Can be useful in chronic pain issues

Onset Time: 40-60 minutes
Average Duration: 2-4 hours

Conclusion

With the many different methods of consumption of CBD, it could take some time to work out what is the best way for you. You may find success by using more than one method at the same time.

I find success in using a tincture and then vaping an e-liquid of my choice mixed with the CBD Vape Shot for the next 30 minutes. This way, there is an immediate effect from vaping the CBD, and then a gradual build-up from the tincture. The vaping almost kick starts the impact of the tincture.

Topical treatment is also effective on my bad back and can provide excellent relief on problematic areas.

It has taken several months of experimentation to come up with a CBD formula to success for my needs, but now I have the recipe, I don’t have to rely on prescribed medication and live a more natural lifestyle. Try the various methods of consumption, and you’re sure to find your formula.
